Common Dental Emergencies

Know when to call us immediately

Severe Toothache

Persistent, severe pain may indicate an infection that needs immediate attention. Don't wait - call us right away.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Save any fragments and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Try to reinsert it or keep it in milk until you reach our office.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a crown falls off, keep it safe and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side until we can see you.

Abscess

A painful, swollen area in your gums may indicate an infection. This can be serious if left untreated.

Bleeding or Injury

Persistent bleeding after an injury or dental procedure needs immediate evaluation.

Emergency Tips

What to do while you wait for your appointment

For Pain

Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for swelling.

For a Broken Tooth

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply gauze if there's bleeding.

For a Knocked-Out Tooth

Handle carefully, don't touch the root. Place it back in the socket if possible, or in milk or saliva.
